Memories of Shark trips from Westman Islands

Shark fishering was very popular in Westman island in the nineteenth century. Called 'Shark touring " by the islanders the golden age of shark fishing was during the years 1860 - 1888 and were conducted in open vessels. From sharks to herring: employment and population development in Árneshreppur in the Strandir 1850 - 1950

Árneshreppur in the Strandir is the northernmost main administrative division of Strandasýsla and inhabitants practiced agriculture and fishing interchangeably. In the nineteenth century was a shark caught and fish oil sold for export. Early twentieth century shaw replacement with  herring fishery and Djúpavík was central of  the silver .
