1. “The Haukur schooner” old wooden boat restored and used for whale-watching in Húsavík. A private company restored old wooden boats and successfully contributed to creating the imageof what the locals refer to as “The Whale Watching Capital of the World”. A successful combination of traditionalactivity, new economic activity and preservation, with a hint of fantasy of mass-tourism.

 

2. “Grímsstaðavörin” - an old fishing/ lumpfishing boat-launch site in Reykjavík
An old fishing boat-launch site has been rebuilt and re-activated to combine traditional economi cactivity with preservation and dissemination for the public and tourists.

 

3. “Húni II” the old wooden boat in Akureyri
An old wooden boat with multi-dimensional community and economic uses..

 

4. “The Whale Museum” in Húsavík – culturally appropriate new activity
The Whale Museum in Húsavík is a non-profit organization founded in 1997 with a focus onproviding detailed and interesting information about whales and their habitat.

 

5. “Grassroots – Iðnaðar og Nýsköpun (craft-centre and innovation)”
A multi-media and development centre for the creation of jobs and cultural projects, this is a venuewhere people from all walks of life, including the young and unemployed can come and work on projects in thefields of industry, culture and services.

 

6. “The Young Boatbuilder” – a new generation of traditional boat-builders?
Young Jón Ragnar Daðason is currently the only, but hopefully only the first of many young peopleinterested in learning the old craft of boat-building

 

7. “The Herring Era Museum” – grassroots project expanded.
A unique museum in the town of Siglufjörður in north-east Iceland has provided new opportunities,awareness and self-confidence to a marginal community.

 

8. “Víkin (the Bay) Maritime Museum”.
A Maritime Museum located at the harbour in Reykjavík in a building from the year 1947 which wasformerly used as a fish-freezing plant. It opened in the year 2005 during the festive weekend where the seaand sailors are celebrated; a traditional festival which has been held since the 1920´s.

 

9. “Folk Music Center in Siglufjörður” – visit and sharing of knowledge.
The Folk Center in Siglufjörður is the only of its kind in Iceland and contributed to renewed interestand respect in old Icelandic, traditional music.
